Blocks of flats. Welling. Kent

The Problem

Spalling concrete to balconies.

The Solution

Inadequate cover and subsequent rusting of reinforcement had led to spalling concrete. In addition, the client wished to replace the aged balustrading with new. After stripping the existing asphalt deck, Charterbuild carried out a electronic and physical survey of the concrete balconies to identify areas of low cover and the areas which required to be removed and replaced. Blast cleaning was used to remove all existing paintwork and detritus before concrete repairs were carried out using Tecroc materials. New balcony railings were manufactured and installed followed by new asphalt decks. The exposed concrete areas were painted with a decorative anti-carbonation paint, giving a finish equivalent to 745mm of cover.
