Stone retaining wall. Bath. Somerset

The Problem

Extensive cracking coupled with overturning.

The Solution

Situated at high level on a natural slope, this retaining wall to a public house was failing due to overturning. Owners, Greene King, retained Charterbuild to undertake an engineering survey and site investigation and the subsequent design and execution of the remedial scheme. A total of 34 Duckbill MR3 stainless steel anchors were installed through the wall in diamond-cored holes. Access difficulties required that the anchors were driven using light hydraulic percussion equipment off scaffolding. After installation, the anchors were proof loaded to ensure that they met the required working load of 30kN before the anchor strands were terminated on the face of the wall using historic pattern cast iron pattress plates.
